THEIR STORY
A life remembered
Joseph Michael Joe Morgan, the New England baseball lifer who managed the Boston Red Sox during the celebrated Morgan Magic era, died on September 5, 2026, in Walpole, Massachusetts. He was 95. A cause of death was not publicly announced.
Morgan was born on November 19, 1930, in Walpole and remained closely connected to the town throughout his life. He played baseball and hockey at Walpole High School and Boston College before beginning a long professional baseball career. After serving in the military and spending years in the minor leagues, he reached Major League Baseball as a utility player and appeared for several clubs between 1959 and 1964.
His greatest impact came after his playing days. Morgan worked throughout baseball as a minor-league manager, coach and scout, accumulating decades of practical experience before receiving the opportunity to manage his hometown Red Sox. He took charge during the 1988 season, immediately leading Boston to 12 consecutive victories and wins in 19 of his first 20 games. The turnaround became known as Morgan Magic and carried the Red Sox to the American League East title.
Morgan led Boston to another division championship in 1990. Fans appreciated his direct style, regional roots and memorable expressions, while players respected the experience he had gained at nearly every level of the sport. To distinguish him from the Hall of Fame second baseman with the same name, supporters often called him Walpole Joe.
The Red Sox inducted Morgan into the team’s Hall of Fame in 2006. Legend Memorial remembers Joe Morgan as a patient, persistent baseball professional whose long-awaited chance to manage produced one of the most memorable stretches in Red Sox history.
