A life remembered
Kip Tyner, longtime Tuscaloosa City Council member and Council President, passed away on September 18, 2026, at the age of 70. A lifelong Tuscaloosa resident, Tyner spent nearly three decades serving the city and became one of its most familiar local leaders. He was first elected to represent District 5 in 1997 and went on to serve seven consecutive terms on the City Council.
- Served as President of the Tuscaloosa City Council, including a second term in the position at the time of his passing.
- Represented District 5 for nearly 30 years.
- Was especially closely connected with the Alberta community.
- Played a major role in rebuilding Alberta after the devastating April 27, 2011 tornado.
- Helped support major community projects, including the Tuscaloosa Tennis Center and improvements along University Boulevard East.
- Helped attract new development and investment to the area, including SWJ Technology.
- Supported animal welfare and served as chair of the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter Advisory Committee.
- Graduated from The University of Alabama with a degree in journalism.
- Had a background in broadcasting and hosted the local television program Great Day Tuscaloosa.
- Also worked in entertainment and founded Kip Tyner’s Talent Search.
- Following his death, Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox ordered city flags to be lowered to half-staff in his honor.
