A life remembered
Lucien Marc Smith, the multidisciplinary American artist who rose to prominence through his inventive Rain Paintings and later created programs for emerging artists, died on September 7, 2026, in New York. He was 37. His cause of death was not publicly announced.
Smith was born on April 15, 1989, in Los Angeles, California. After attending Santa Monica High School, he moved into New York’s art community and studied at Cooper Union. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2011, and work from his student period quickly attracted the attention of galleries and collectors.
He became best known for the Rain Paintings, a series made by spraying paint onto canvas with a fire extinguisher. The method created scattered fields of color that suggested falling rain while challenging familiar ideas about the physical process of painting. The work helped make Smith one of the most discussed young artists of New York’s early-2010s art boom, leading to exhibitions, extensive coverage and strong auction prices while he was still in his twenties.
Smith later stepped back from the pressure and speculation surrounding his rapid success. He expanded his practice into public projects, hospitality and community-building. Through the nonprofit Serving the People, he worked to connect emerging artists and creators with resources, opportunities and one another. This effort became an important part of how colleagues described his later contribution to the arts.
